Tide Talks: Embracing life long learning

Embracing a change of direction is important at all stages in life.

At Tide we are never afraid of change. Be that changing season, changing plans, or indeed changing careers we both did. 

In fact, we really believe that changing and challenging yourself is pretty vital to our physical and mental health. 

One of our core Tide values is the importance of keeping our minds and bodies engaged through lifelong learning and the exploration of new experiences. 

And don’t just take our word for it. Studies have shown that learning new skills, including exercise, supports the brain's neuroplasticity—the ability to form new neural connections—playing a crucial role in maintaining cognitive function. Engaging in activities that stimulate our minds and challenge our bodies can significantly enhance our well-being.

Learning new things, whether it's picking up a new hobby, exploring different cultures, or adopting a fresh exercise routine, not only enriches our lives but also boosts our cognitive health. 

Research shows that physical activities, such as dance classes or group sports, can promote the growth of new neurons in the hippocampus, a brain region vital for memory and learning. Exercise increases blood flow to the brain, ensuring that it receives the oxygen and nutrients necessary for optimal functioning.

It’s not always easy to try new things, but stepping outside our comfort zones can lead to greater mental resilience. When we embrace unfamiliar challenges, we cultivate a growth mindset—one that views failures as opportunities to learn rather than setbacks. This mental agility is essential as we encounter life’s inevitable changes.

Incorporating new learning experiences into our lives can also foster social connections. Last week I tried a new cooking class at the amazing Arbingher Hatch cookery school. Yes, I leant how to make a trout ceviche but honestly it was going back to the classroom and meeting new people that had the greatest impact on me. 

So, why not join us in trying something new this autumn, whether through exercise, getting creative, or taking up meditation, each new experience we embrace forms new neural pathways in our brains, enhancing our overall quality of life. So, let's commit to a lifelong journey of curiosity and exploration—our minds and bodies will thank us!
