Barre: What it is and why you need to try it!

So what on earth is Barre? It’s one of the fastest growing fitness modalities in the world, because of its roots in Ballet and Pilates, it’s not a fad, so expect to see more classes around! Combining the grace and discipline of ballet, yoga and Pilates with the power of strength and conditioning, it's the perfect way to build muscle while increasing your flexibility and mobility.



Think high rep, low impact. Classes are filled with tiny movements and pulses, control is the aim of the game and with each class you can feel yourself gaining control. The class moves fast and exercises do not last long so you need to do about 8 classes before you start to get into the rhythm of the class format, give yourself grace to be new!

The class is musically driven. What does that mean? We move to the beat, double time or just behind the beat. The fun is in knowing that the exercise changes as the music does. This also means we have our signature count down to the end of an exercise. So when you know the final 8 is coming it’s both a challenge and a relief!

The inspiration is rooted in Ballet and is evident in the programming with traditional ballet exercises like plies, arabesques and a lot of unilateral work, training one side of your body at a time.

Barre also pulls from Pilates, so if you have done classical Pilates or more modern style you may notice some familiar movements. One of the pillars of Pilates is ‘control’ this vibe very much crosses over into Barre as you learn to control the tiny movements as you exercise small muscles to fatigue (that’s where the magic happens!)
